Short Bio

Roman is a PhD student at the Telecooperation Research Group. His advisor is Prof. Dr. Max Mühlhäuser. He is a scholar funded by AGT Germany. Roman holds a master degrees in computer science from TU-Darmstadt.

Research Interest

My main research interests lie in the field of Human-Computer Interaction, Ubiquitous Computing and Multimedia.

My current research focuses on the development of novel interaction techniques for multiple, resizable paper-like displays. Furthermore, I investigate novel means for collaboration support on interactive surfaces and novel tabletop systems. My work is thus situated at the intersection of tangible user interfaces, interactive surfaces, multi-display / multi-device interaction and (mobile) multimedia.During my dissertation work, I have also developed a high interest in sensor-based input (touch, hover) for omnipresent body-based interaction.

Throughout my research, I employ empirical methodologies (e.g. using quantitative and qualitative approaches) to understand users and therefore ground my work.

Research Projects

Permulin EarPut Collaborative TV
Permulin is centred on the idea of providing both personal and shared in- and output for collaborating users. We present EarPut, a novel interface concept, which instruments the ear as an interactive surface for touch-based interactions and its prototypical hardware implementation. We propose a number of interaction techniques allowing TV viewers to use their mobile phones to view and share content with others in the room, thus supporting local social interaction.

PaperVideo Xpaaand FoldMe
In this project, we investigated how interaction with video can benefit from multiple paper-like displays that support interaction with motion and sound. Future generations of displays will be thin, lighweight, and flexible. In this project, we develop novel interaction techniques for displays which can be dynamically expanded and collapsed. In this project, we present a novel device concept that features double-sided displays which can be folded using predefined hinges.

In this project, we investigate how novel mobile user interfaces can be utilized to support users efficiently when working with videos on the move.
